That relationship discussed in the excerpt is one based on time and wisdom. It starts with a determination to keep the vows made touched with continued forgiveness and love. One definite key factor is that the relationship is ordained by God.
I must start this off rather redundantly because this scripture is almost a road map to a relationship that works….
And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
If we can truly love God, I mean really love God, I’m trying to say loving him to the point of total obedience to all he ask, because you’re always looking to hear from him. You know that kind of love where you think about him first thing in the morning and you fall asleep talking to him a night, and when you wake up in the middle of the night, his name is the first name you call; that kind of love?
When we can get there, he will love through you because you would have given him all of you. So many of us give all of ourselves to unworthy recipients, who when they have used you up move on to the next victim. The Lord will not be that kind of lover. First off, the Lord will not be intimate with you without marrying you! That’s the first sign of true commitment. Christ will out love us every time. He will listen, love, hold, protect and provide for you. That relationship is the one that must work first.
It is then you will know what real love is. Otherwise you will measure love by some fictitious definition portrayed to us in the media , movies & night clubs. The only person that could ever teach us how to love is the one that mastered love itself because He Is Love! So now that you have that relationship down, he through the Holy Spirit will teach you how to make your marriage work. I didn’t say it would be wonderful everyday, No; it won’t be. As a matter of fact there will be many difficult times but love is a tenacious spirit that won’t quit when it’s real!
Forgive me for making this one a long blog but this subject is so important to the body of Christ because the world is watching us and our relationships with those we say we love. Argue if you have to, but talk it out so each of you can heal. Once you have done your part, step back and watch God. God knows how to crack the shell of so called hard headed Christians. You know if Christ in John 17 said…” that they may be one as we are one” he knows what’s necessary to bring us together as one. When we come together in love that will be the ultimate “relationship that work”.
